VPI, a leading power company, is set to build its first utility-scale battery project in Germany. Less than a year after entering the market, the company has made a final investment decision to proceed with a 17 MW installation in the state of Hessen.

The project will be delivered through VPI’s German arm, established in September last year, and will be developed without public subsidies.

As Hessen continues to expand its renewable energy portfolio, particularly in solar and wind, battery storage offers a crucial solution to manage grid variability and the increasing strain on the distribution grid. It also helps reduce the need for new grid investments to cope with increased levels of renewables. These systems store excess energy, smooth out fluctuations, and release power during peak demand—delivering a stable, round-the-clock supply of clean electricity.

Already a major battery operator in Ireland, VPI anticipates that more than 150 MW of its utility-scale battery projects in Germany will reach a final investment decision in the coming months. In addition, the company has recently announced a new partnership with Noveria Energy to build a further 700MW of batteries. This takes the company’s total pipeline to around 1GW by 2030, creating a significant platform for battery investment.

Dr Theodor Borsche, Geschäftsführer of VPI in Germany said:
“Hessen’s growing renewable energy output, combined with its critical need for reliable power, makes battery storage an essential part of the region’s energy future. These systems don’t just help integrate clean energy into the grid—they’re powering the digital economy and driving industrial growth. This project is the first in a broader pipeline designed to support Germany’s transition to a more flexible, resilient energy system. I’m grateful to the local municipality for their support in bringing this initiative to life. We’re now ready to break ground.”
