- 144 MWh stand-alone battery energy storage project in Pasewalk, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, has reached final investment decision and entered early-stage construction
- The project marks another step forward in VPI’s 1GW battery storage pipeline in Germany
Berlin/Pasewalk/London, 19 June 2026 – VPI, a leading international power company, has reached final investment decision and entered early-stage construction on a 144MWh battery energy storage system in Pasewalk, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
The project is part of VPI’s German battery storage pipeline of more than 1GW currently under development. Located in a region with significant wind generation, the Pasewalk battery project will help store surplus renewable power, relieve pressure on the grid and reduce redispatch costs.
The project is being built in partnership with market-leading battery supplier CATL, Intec Energy Solutions as the Balance of Plant contractor, Wood Group as Owner’s Engineer and BPM as planning consultant.
Germany is a significant growth market for battery storage as renewable generation increases. Industry analysis suggests that 30-50GW of utility-scale batteries could be needed to support the country’s energy system. At the same time, the market remains complex, with evolving regulation, revenue uncertainty and the need to optimise projects across development, construction, operations and trading. This increases the value of integrated capability and local expertise in delivering investable projects at scale.
Dr. Theodor Borsche, Managing Director of VPI Germany, said: “Reaching Final Investment Decision and starting construction at Pasewalk is an important step forward for VPI in Germany. Battery storage will play a critical role in supporting a more flexible, renewables-led energy system, and we are pleased to be investing in projects that can help address some of the practical challenges facing the grid.”
Max Goretzko, Country Manager Development in Germany, added: “We are grateful for the support of the Municipality of Pasewalk and for the positive collaboration with the authorities in the District of Vorpommern-Greifswald. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has strong ambitions for battery storage, and we are committed to play a leading role in helping deliver that opportunity.”
